Unique Characteristics of
Burning Used Oil
- Reduced airflow in the waste oil burner can cause incomplete combustion
- Accumulation of ash produces adverse effects:
- Reduced heat transfer (U.S. Bureau of Mines).
Research done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined
that 1/32-inch of soot coating causes 9.5% loss of burner efficiency. The following table shows how soot
thickness affects burner efficiency
| Buildup of Soot in

- For the following are reasons conventional burners/boilers are not appropriate
for burning waste oil:
- Improper heat exchanger design
- Cannot provide constant airflow volume
- Combustion chamber is too small
- No refractory lining of combustion chamber or flame target
- Poor accessibility for routine cleaning
- The design of our waste oil heater/boiler addresses all of
the problems:
- Heat exchanger designed to prevent ash buildup and achieve high transfer efficiency
- Large access door provides easy access for maintenance and cleaning
- Refractory lined extra large combustion chamber produces high temperature combustion zone
- Water tube design for efficiency, improved draft and minimal floor area used with its vertical design

B Series Waste Oil Heater/Boiler

The B Series waste oil heater/boiler design is tried and true.
The design has been in operation for over 18 years with a spotless
record. Even after 18 years, our B Series design is
still the most state-of-the-art waste oil heater/boiler design on the market.
The following is what makes the B Series design
different from our competitors:
- An Airflow-inducing Fan causes the ash to be pulled
through the boiler at high speeds keeping it from depositing
on the burner wall. It also allows adjustment of the
airflow according to the desired BTU.
- The Swirl Chamber is a high pressure area in the
burner that allows hot exhaust to reside for a long period of
time. Coupled with a swirling motion, which gives the
burner the ability to drop the temperature of the exhaust from 1,800
degrees to as low as 350 degrees (see below) before it is allowed to exit
the burner, THE SWIRL CHAMBER IS OUR KEY TO HIGH EFFICIENCY
COMBUSTION OF WASTE OIL .
- The Cyclone Ash Collection System does the major part
of the self-cleaning action of our waste oil burner - the rapidly moving
ash acts to scour the walls of the inside of the burner preventing buildup and providing a self-cleaning action.
The cyclone funnels the ash into a pail for easy disposal.
- A Secondary Air Inlet allows oxygen to enter the burn
target for secondary combustion - any un-combusted waste oil remaining in the flue gases is provided another opportunity to
be completely combusted.
Stack Temperature
The stack temperature is an indicator of how
completely the waste oil is being combusted. The Alternate
Heating Systems Inc. B Series operates
with one of the coolest stack temperatures of any waste oil
heater/boiler on the market (we believe that it is actually the
coolest). Because of the nature of the fuel, the stack
temperature will vary. The low stack temperatures of our boilers are almost unheard of on
the market.
Using Fly Ash to Self-Clean the Swirl Chamber
The combustion of the fuel is so thorough that very little fly ash is
produced. But even the fly ash that is produced is put to good use - the
system is designed so that the fly ash scours the inside of the swirl chamber,
preventing the buildup of creosote that can dramatically
lower combustion efficiency. After scouring the swirl chamber, the little
fly ash that remains from the combustion process is deposited in an ash pan that
can be easily removed.

PT Series Waste Oil Heater/Boiler

The PT Series is perfect for anyone wanting a high-quality, lower cost alternative to the B Series Waste Oil Heater/ Boiler

PT Burner End |
The PT
Story...
Our manufacturing
company has been making state of the art waste oil heaters/boilers since 1982
with no claims on boiler deterioration. After visiting with three reputable
distributors we became concerned about the waste oil heaters on the
market at the time.
It was brought to our
attention that most waste oil heaters have major
deterioration in about 2 - 5 years. Look at the warranties for
yourself - this will tell you how confident they are of their product.
They issue outrageous BTU claims on burners that take 3 - 4 hours to
give an ordinary cleaning... and the story goes on from there.
We hurdled all these
problems years ago with our B Series waste oil heater/boiler. We were amazed when
three reputable distributors had a complaint about our B Series - their
complaint was that, while we had an excellent and most efficient
product, it included a "state of the art" price as well.
The PT Series is our
response to our distributors' and customers' desire for a well-built,
easily cleaned waste oil heater/boiler at a reduced price.

The Alternate Heating Systems Water Wall
Each Alternate Heating Systems boiler, heater and
furnace is designed so that every piece of steel is in contact
with the water in the system that is used to transfer heat to your
radiant floor heat system, radiator, baseboard hot water, or heat
exchanger. This design ensures the most rapid and efficient
heat transfer from the firebox into the water. Efficiency is
increased compared to other boilers that do not have this feature
by allowing less heat to escape from the boiler surfaces before it
is captured in the water.
ASME Certification
The American Society
of Mechanical Engineers certification is available on any of
our boiler lines for an additional charge. This
certification assures that the pressure vessel has been designed
and constructed in accordance with the ASME Code. This
certification is required for all commercial installations.
The certification is also required for some residential
installations depending upon local codes - it is up to the
homeowner to determine the need for an ASME certification on any
boiler purchased.
